Find Permanent Links in Databases: Finding Permanent Links in Databases

Find Permanent Links to Articles, Documents, Streaming Audio, and Video

Persistent URLs (also called PURLs, stable URLs, persistent
links, or durable links) are internet addresses that (hopefully) always
remain the same. They are provided by online databases so one can access
individual full-text articles, documents, video and/or audio clips
directly. These can be shared with students by placing the links in a
course management system like Blackboard as a preferred alternative to
placing physical copies of materials on reserve at the library. Many of
the library’s database subscriptions’ licensing allow these materials to
be used in Blackboard. Proper linking using these persistent URLs is
also important because it keeps us in line with copyright and fair use.

Click on the database vendor name to find specific instructions on finding/creating persistent links to be placed in Blackboard.

Note: Proxy Prefix and DOI

Adding the Proxy PrefixIn order for the
links to articles from library databases to work from off campus, the
proxy server address for Elmhurst College needs to be attached to the
front of the database-provided persistent URL. Our proxy server address
is: http://proxy.elmhurst.edu/login?url=

For example, if the persistent URL provided by the database
is http://www.jstor.org/stable/40058132, just copy and paste our proxy
server address at the beginning so the persistent URL looks like this:

http://proxy.elmhurst.edu/login?url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/40058132

Databases that need the proxy address added manually to the front of the persistent URL are noted in the instructions.

Creating a Digital Object Identifier LinkA
digital object identifier (DOI) can be used to cite and link to
electronic documents. A DOI is guaranteed never to change, so you can
use it to link permanently to electronic documents. To find a document
using a DOI, first copy the DOI of the document you want to open. Then
open the following DOI site in your browser:http://dx.doi.org.proxy.elmhurst.edu Enter
the entire DOI citation in the text box provided, and then click Go.
The document that matches the DOI citation will display in your browser
window.
